Qualification summary
The Cambridge International Level 1/Level 2 Certificate provides a broad programme of study with a global perspective for students in the twenty first century.
The syllabus aims to enable students to:
1. make effective use of relevant terminology, concepts and methods and recognise the strengths and limitations of the ideas used;
2. apply their knowledge and critical understanding to current issues and problems in a wide range of appropriate contexts;
3. distinguish between facts and opinions, and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data in order to help build arguments and make informed judgements;
4. appreciate the perspectives of a range of stakeholders in relation to the environment, individuals, society, government and enterprise;
5. develop knowledge and understanding of the major groups and organisations within and outside business and consider ways in which they are able to influence objectives, decisions and activities;
6. develop knowledge and understanding of how the main types of business and commercial institutions are organised, financed and operated and how their relations with other organisations, consumers, employees, owners and society are regulated;
7. develop skills of numeracy, literacy, enquiry, selection and employment of relevant sources of information, presentation and interpretation;
8. develop an awareness of the nature and significance of innovation and changes with the context of business activities.
Teachers should note that not all of the above aims are necessarily subject to formal assessment.

Cambridge International Level 1/Level 2 Certificates are general qualifications that enable candidates to progress directly to employment, or to proceed to further qualifications.
This syllabus provides a foundation for further study at Levels 2 and 3 in the National Qualifications Framework, including GCSE, AS and A Level GCE, and Cambridge Pre-U qualifications.
Candidates who are awarded grades C to A* are well prepared to follow courses leading to level 3 AS and A level GCE Business Studies, AS and A Level Applied Business and Management or the Cambridge International AS and A level Business Studies.

The qualification is assessed using independent and holistic assessment.
All Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate syllabuses follow a general pattern. The main sections are: Aims; Assessment Objectives; Assessment; Curriculum Content.
The Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate in Business Studies is assessed through 3 components. The assessments all take place at the end of the two-year course and a single grade is awarded. All candidates take Paper 1 plus Paper 2. Paper 3 is an optional coursework component. All candidates are eligible for the award of grades A* to G.
Paper 1 contains short-answer questions and structured/ data response questions. There is no choice of questions.
Paper 2 requires the candidate to answer questions arising from stimulus material in the paper, presented as a case study.
Paper 3 is an optional internally assessed assignment of 3000 -4000 words. Centres wishing to undertake this component must gain prior written approval of CIE.
