LAMDA Level 3 Certificate in Performance (QCF)

Qualification summary

Purpose of the Qualification

LAMDA examinations in Performance are designed to develop the skills necessary for effective oral communication.

Learners who prepare themselves appropriately will develop:

1. Interpretative skills
2. Technical skills
3. Knowledge appropriate to the chosen option.

Performance
Learners will be able to support their intentions in performance by demonstrating a sound understanding of material, leading to a personal and imaginative interpretation in which there is consistent application of developing technical skills. Presentation will be audible, with clear articulation and vocal variation through which shades of meaning and contrasts are communicated. Learners will show clear evidence of sensitivity to and skilful handling of the material. Their effective preparation, study and self-analysis will lead to a secure, accurate and sustained performance, which also conveys a sense of spontaneity. Use of voice, body and space will be effectively combined to enhance meaning and interpretation and to engage the audience.

Repertoire
These features will be demonstrated through choice of material which is substantial enough to convey some development, both in terms of author’s intentions and candidate's interpretation and performance. Content will be sufficiently complex to provide some contrast and range and will provide opportunities for learners to begin to explore more universal themes. There will be stylistic variety of language and literary form and some subtleties of vocabulary and syntax will provide opportunities for a variety of approaches and interpretative choices.

The specification for Graded Examinations in Performance is divided into four distinct levels in line with the Qualifications and Credit Framework and is designed to provide pathways into a range of higher level certificates and diplomas which may offer a further vocational or professional progression route. These examinations are designed on a model of ‘progressive mastery’. Each grade is self-contained but builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at previous grades as well as applying practical skills in the context of a progressively complex repertoire.

Structure and Pathways:

Entry Level 3: Entry
Level 1: Grades 1, 2, 3
Level 2: Grades 4, 5
Level 3: Grade 6: Bronze Medal, Grade 7: Silver Medal, Grade 8: Gold Medal

Performance: Acting (Grades Entry – 8)
Miming (Grades Entry – 8)
Devising Drama (Grades Entry – 8)

Within each grade there are a range of options or pathways which may be taken individually or combined for breadth.

Learning outcomes and assessment criteria are set by grade and by option/pathway. Repertoire increases by linguistic and technical difficulty as the grades progress. The knowledge required increases in technical difficulty (breadth and depth) as the grades progress.
