The Cambridge International Level1/Level2 Certificate in Biology is assessed through 6 components. The assessments all take place at the end of the two-year course and a single grade is awarded.

Candidates take Paper 1 (multiple choice) plus either Paper 2 (core) or Paper 3 (extension) plus one from Paper 4 (school based assessment of practical skills), Paper 5 (practical) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical). Candidates who take Paper 2 are eligible for the award of grades C to G. Candidates who take Paper 3 are eligible for the award of grades A* to E.

Paper1 is a multiple choice paper of 40 items of the four-choice type.

Paper 2 and Paper 3 are theory papers consisting of 80 marks of short answer and structured questions.

Centres will also enter candidates for a practical component to test appropriate skills. There is a choice of either Paper 4, a school based assessment of practical skills, Paper 5, a practical examination with questions covering experimental and observational skills or Paper 6, a written paper designed to test familiarity with laboratory based procedures.
