Qualification details

EDEXCEL Level 1 BTEC Award in Land-based Studies (QCF)

Qualification summary

This qualification aims to give learners the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge for the land-based sector.

The qualification is designed for post-16 learners who may be interested in working in the land-based sector in the future. It is also suitable for learners who may be entering employment for the first time or those wishing to change their career or occupation.

Learners may have basic skills gaps which would prevent them from embarking on a Level 2 qualification.

The choice of units gives a broad overview of the four areas of the land-based sector which are most popular with learners: small animal care, equine studies, horticulture and farm animal care. Two generic units - assist with the maintenance of equipment, and maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace - are relevant to all four areas.

While the overall qualification is at Level 1, some units are at Entry Level 3 to allow learners to develop their skills in these areas if necessary.

Four Workskills units at Level 2 have also been included.

All the units included in this proposal will help learners to develop generic skills that are valued by employers.
