EDEXCEL Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science (QCF)

Qualification summary

The Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science is drawn from the Level 2 BTEC Applied Science sector suite of units. The Level 2 BTEC Diploma is a vocationally-related qualification that focuses on the development of practical skills and underpinning knowledge in science. It is designed for learners in full and part time education in schools or further education colleges. The mandatory units meet the requirements of the Programme of Study for Key Stage 4 Science.

The Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Applied Science provides much of the underpinning knowledge required for industry recognised qualifications. Units are signposted to National Occupational Standards for this purpose. The units focus on the role of the science technician or assistant practitioner, their relationship with the scientific community and their responsibilities towards the community and the environment.

The specification is structured to allow learners maximum flexibility in selecting specialist optional units, so that particular interests and career aspirations within science, and intentions for progression, can be reflected in the choice of unit combinations. The units are designed to develop underpinning knowledge in job roles identified in the SEMTA sector qualification strategy and to support learning of the Diploma through Additional Specialist Learning (ASL). The units are structured to enable the most appropriate and realistic forms of assessment to be utilised.

The units have been developed to provide opportunities to assess personal learning and thinking skills across the qualification. Opportunities for developing Functional Skills have been signposted in units.
