City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma for Medical Secretaries (QCF)

Qualification summary

This qualification is aimed at young and adult learners who would like to pursue a specialised secretarial career path within a health care setting. It will enable them to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills needed to fufil this vital role within medical administration.

In addition to gaining specialist knowledge of medical terminology, learners will also understand how to:
• manage their time and workload
• work as an effective team member and support health care professionals
• implement efficient administrative systems and procedures
• produce documents appropriate for the medical environment
• deal with patients and maintain confidentiality
• apply relevant legislation to the medical environment.
With a range of optional units the learner also has the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a workplace setting and develop additional IT skills.

This qualification provides opportunties for employment and career progression within health care administration/secretarial support and progression to further learning via qualifications such as the Level 3 N/SVQ in Business and Administration and the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration for which it is recognised as a technical certificate. Learners may also progress to the Level 3 and 4 leadership and management qualifications or even to the Level 5 Diploma in Primary Care Management.

The learner needs to achieve a minimum of 49 credits to gain the Level 3 Diploma for Medical Secretaries. They will have to complete 4 mandatory units (39 credits) and achieve a further 10 credits from either Group A or Group B optional units. If they choose Group A they must achieve Level 3 Medical Terminology, if they choose Group B they must achieve Level 2 Medical Terminology.
