TCL Level 2 Award in the Arts (QCF)

Qualification summary

This qualification forms part of a suite of examinations, which span the range of objectives from Level 1 to Level 3. The assessment schemes and the explicit nature of the specification documents are designed to achieve maximum positive feedback on learning processes while not defining either materials or methods too prescriptively. Preparatory work on projects and materials encourages the use of collaborative group work.

The Level 2 Award supports and recognises young people’s development in the arts by encouraging them to:

- experience a range of arts activities as participant and audience member
- research the careers of artists
- act as an arts apprentice to a professional arts leader, working alongside and under the guidance of the leader.

This qualification supports young people’s creative development in five key ways:
- encourages and supports young people aged 11–25 to develop their interest and participation in arts, media and cultural activities
- supports young people’s creative development and nurtures talent
- complements and extends the arts and cultural experiences young people have within formal education
- provides opportunities for collaborative work and leadership which promote young people’s personal development
- provides opportunities for young people to research and identify progression routes in the arts and cultural sectors

Further, the content recognises a wide range of arts and cultural activity:
- performing arts (such as music, dance, drama, storytelling, circus, mime, carnival, musical theatre)
- visual arts, craft and design (such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, fashion, design, architecture)
- literature (such as poetry, fiction, journalism, scriptwriting, storytelling)
- media and multimedia (such as photography, film, video, broadcasting, web design, multimedia games design)
- new art forms and emerging cultural activity
- combinations of any of these art forms.

This qualification provides useful opportunities for enrichment activities within schools/colleges and are designed to give young people a chance to gain credit for work which they often undertake voluntarily.

This qualification, which forms part of a suite of examinations, offers progression up to a level of proficiency that is appropriate for entry to Higher education, Trinity’s higher-level Diplomas in music, drama and speech, as well as other qualifications such as Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) in the performing and visual arts. Candidates who choose not to progress to the Level 3 Arts Award may wish to work towards relevant BTEC Nationals, GCSEs and A Levels.

These qualifications also provide useful information to employers on a young person’s ability to work within an arts context and their understanding of the sector. By encouraging artistic activity, developing high standards of perception, creativity, leadership, communication and team working skills, as well as rewarding progress and achievement, these Awards provide a set of clear standards for the benefit of schools, colleges and employers.

Additionally, candidates can build on work that they may already be doing in schools such as their National Curriculum studies.

This qualification values high art, popular culture, and the arts of all countries and peoples. Young people can take part in many different ways, not only as creators of their own work, but also as performers, backstage team, front-of-house staff, technicians, camera operators, writers, editors, promoters, DJs, costume designers, prop makers, etc.
