Exploring Specialist Ceramic Techniques

Unit summary

In this unit learners will experience clay directly. The opportunity to explore a range of ceramic materials, techniques and processes will enable them to develop practical skills. Emphasis is placed on learning through doing, and reflecting on the results. Ceramicists build up a wealth of knowledge on their subject through practical application of ideas and technical knowledge. In this way they develop a personal language in ceramics suited to their intentions.
The beauty of clay as a medium for recording the marks of the maker mean it is ideally suited for surface explorations such as applying textures. The aim is to gain a thorough understanding of the natural properties and tactile qualities of clay and ceramic materials, and the techniques and processes used to transform them into ceramic ware.
