Exploring Carpentry and Joinery

Unit summary

Timber is perhaps the most versatile construction material available, and carpenters and joiners have been an integral part of the construction industry from the earliest days of the industry. In theory, carpentry and joinery are different trades, but in practice they have a great deal in common, using more or less the same tools and materials. Many craftspeople working with timber would consider themselves to be both carpenters and joiners, and together they comprise the largest craft group working in the construction industry today. While carpentry and joinery are practical crafts and require practical skills, as for every craft, they require some underpinning knowledge and understanding, and this is what is covered in this unit.
This unit introduces the learner to the hand tools most commonly used in carpentry and joinery, and to the basic skills required to form simple joints and frames in timber. The correct selection and safe use of the hand tools required to carry out simple carpentry and joinery processes is strongly emphasised, as is the correct selection and safe use of personal protective equipment (PPE). This unit also introduces the learner to the fundamental principles and methods of producing and using setting out rods. Working in the construction crafts can be dangerous and the importance of good health, safety and welfare practices is stressed throughout this unit.
