These NVQs at Levels 2 and 3 are an integral part of the ASL Apprenticeships for those involved in Vehicle Maintenance. Therefore candidates (normally aged 16-25) who are keen to build a career in the industry can progress onto the framework.
When a Level 2 Apprenticeship is completed, the apprentice can progress to a Level 3 Apprenticeship, or broaden their education and training in other ways from this firm base.
For some individuals these NVQs could also provide a useful recognition of professional competence to aid their step up from one job role to another, e.g. into supervisory and/or management roles, or more responsible positions in engineering.
For other individuals achieving a Level 3 NVQ, it could prepare them for progression to, or provide access to further education, and/or higher education, for example;
• The IMI National gives the opportunity for progression in education, and within the workplace to management positions. Individuals can gain a broader breadth of learning to bridge the gap in their vocational qualifications.
• IMI Level 4 Diploma for Automotive Master Technicians (Light or Heavy Vehicle Route)
• Automotive Retail Management Standards (ARMS)
• Management VQs
• Master Technician and other management qualifications
• Gain credit for entry onto a Higher National Diploma, or degree, e.g. a Foundation degree, BEng or BSc.

The assessment criteria is set out in the assessment documentation, where the candidates are required to demonstrate all of the evidence requirements, performance, scope and essential knowledge through workplace evidence.
