Operate a Computer

Unit summary

This is the ability to carry out the initial steps in using an IT system (eg turning on a personal computer (PC) and using a mouse to navigate around a screen) and operate hardware and software day-to-day (eg a PC or personal digital assistant (PDA), operating systems and software that is suitable for the task in hand).

This involves: setting up and using an IT system safely (eg keyboard, mouse, screen and printer); and using common types of software for simple tasks (eg producing a letter or sending an e-mail).

Learning Outcome Assessment Criteria
1 Know about computer hardware, software and associated health and safety issues. 1.1 Describe the common types of computer hardware and how to use them.

1.2 Describe how to start a computer

1.3 Describe what the basic tools and functions of software applications can be used for and how to select and use appropriate tools and functions for simple tasks.

1.4 Describe the health and safety risks to self and others from common types of computer hardware.

1.5 Describe what health and safety laws and guidelines affect the use of IT.
2 Carry out the initial steps needed to use a computer, and make use of common types of hardware and software. 2.1 Turn on a personal computer (PC) and printer and change basic settings, such as sound volume, date and time.

2.2 Access files on a computer hard drive or local storage media.

2.3 Use basic software tools and techniques such as open, close, save and print files in folders.
