NVQ - National Vocational Qualification

When undertaking a qualification that does not appear on the governments' lists as eligible for funding for specific age ranges, users must be aware of legal requirements. Not all qualifications are suitable for all age ranges.
On achieving NVQ Level 3 candidates can further their training and competence by progressing on to a number of equine awards available at levels 4 and 5, whether they be academic HNC/HNC type courses or other practical based awards. NVQ Level 3 also allows candidates to have direct entry into the EQL/BHS Stages exams.
Candidates who have completed all the mandatory units can apply for entry to the Horse Knowledge and Care at Stage 2, 3 or 4, however to apply for the Riding at these levels candidates mush have completed optional units 314 & 316, Schooling Horses. Candidates who have achieved the full NVQ Level 3 including Schooling Horses are now able to apply for direct entry into the EQL/BHS Preliminary Teaching Test.
Holders of NVQ Level 3 should be able to obtain employment in a variety of establishments that house equines. They may be responsible for supervising and guiding staff, organising work and have a broad range of knowledge and skills which can be applied to a variey of work routines. They will be able to assume responsibility of others and run a small yard.
Assessment is carried on a continuous basis either at the candidates place of work, or on an approved Assessment Location.
Assessment and Verification is carried out in line with the UKCG approved Assessment Strategy for the NVQs in Horse Care. The requirements of this document are written into the BHS S/NVQ Operational Handbook.
Candidates must complete all units in Group A, Mandatory Units.
Candidates must also follow one route from Exercising; Schooling;
Light Horse Driving; Heavy Horses; Trekking; Polo; Breaking; Breeding;
Coaching; and Competition, and complete all units in their chosen
route. Additional units may be completed but these are not a
requirement for the award.
