The NEBOSH National Fire Certificate offers a sound basis for further Certificate-level study: Unit NGC1 also forms part of the NEBOSH National General Certificate (a.k.a. the NEBOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety) and the NEBOSH National Construction Certificate (a.k.a. the NEBOSH Level 3 Certificate in Construction Health and Safety).

These provide aspiring health and safety practitioners with a basis to progress to further professional study, such as the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (a.k.a. the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety).

Units NGC1 and FC1 are each assessed by a two-hour written examination. Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

Unit FC2 is assessed by one three-hour practical demonstration/assignment, internally assessed by the programme organiser and externally moderated by NEBOSH.
The qualification consists of three mandatory units. Once a candidate has been awarded a unit certificate for all three units, the marks for all three units are added together and the total determines the final grade for the overall qualification.

Candidates already holding unit NGC1 will be exempt from this unit as part of the Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management. This exemption lasts for five years from the successful result declaration date of the NGC1 unit.
