Qualification summary

The overall aim of the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) is to increase the productivity of those who use a keyboard as part of their job role or everyday lives.

The technical skills that the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) will deliver are relevant to almost every activity that involves the use of a computer. Those who achieve the BCS qualification will benefit from the ability to save time and be generally more efficient when using a computer.

Upon completion of the qualification the learner will be able to:

• touch-type using all fingers
• touch-type at a speed greater than their handwriting speed
• touch-type whilst maintaining a degree of accuracy in excess of 90%
• touch-type using the key pad and the number pad

The target market for the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) is very broad. It is therefore aimed at anyone who wishes to develop the necessary skills to be able to touch-type proficiently to specific levels of speed and accuracy. It is also aimed at those who wish to prove, or seek endorsement for, their existing skills when using a keyboard or typewriter.

The BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) provides many progression opportunities. As previously mentioned, the BCS currently offers qualifications for ICT Users across Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 as both VRQs and NVQs (ITQ). The BCS sees the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) as being positioned alongside these qualifications to complement them. In a sense, a learner may take the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) in parallel with an ICT qualification offered by the BCS. It may be the case that the leaner progresses to a BCS ICT qualification as a result of completing the BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type).

The BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) has a relationship with the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for its sector/subject area. By viewing this relationship and mapping it against their own achievements learners may identify further development needs to aid their progression.

The BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) also maps to relevant areas of the Key Skills Specifications. This presents providers with an opportunity to develop courses of study that will enable learners to generate evidence towards a Key Skills qualification.

E-assessment
All assessments are externally set by the BCS. Every assessment test is delivered and marked via an online e-assessment system. The qualification is based on the successful completion of one end of unit assessment test that is then graded against a pre-determined scale.
The BCS Level 2 Certificate in Touch-Typing (e-type) consists of one unit - Touch-Typing Techniques. Learners are required to complete an end of unit assessment test in order to acheive the qualification.
