Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)

Qualification summary

The Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) will replace the Cambridge ESOL Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA).

CELTA is an initial qualification designed for people with little or no teaching experience. It is suitable for people starting a career in English language teaching and also for people teaching English with no formal qualifications. CELTA is one of the most popular qualifications in English language teaching, taken by over 10,000 people each year. It is widely accepted by organisations which employ English Language teachers.

The content of the CELTA has been amended as part of the process to integrate it into LLUK's qualifications strategy. As a result of these changes candidates successfully completing the CELTA course will have the skills to manage a classroom and work as independent teaching professionals.

CELTA is currently incorporated into undergraduate degree courses at two universities and this is as part of the second year of the course. The universities judge CELTA to be at a level equivalent to level I (intermediate) on the Framework of Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ), which has been mapped to level 5 of the NQF.

English
CELTA has been accepted by LLUK as a pathway into the DTE(E)LLS (Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector) and ADTE(E)LLS (Additional Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector) qualifications. PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) has also been mapped to CELTA and is being delivered as part of the CELTA programme, thereby forming an essential component of this strategy.

CELTA holders, who go on to acquire substantial teaching experience, may also progress on to the Cambridge ESOL Level 7 Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA).

CELTA is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers.
